Spotify’s services are slowly returning to normal after Google Cloud problem

If you like listening to Spotify using the company’s web interface, you might still be among those who are without music at the moment. An Apparent problem with Google Cloud has been responsible for interrupting access to several major web services including Snapchat, Discord, Fitbit, and Nest apps.

Downdetector.com indicates that there were more than 50,000 reports of Spotify trouble starting around noon Eastern Time, but these numbers have been steadily declining since then. Spotify is aware of the problem and has reported it on its community site. It still says that the issue is under investigation. According to the article, both the web and the mobile player are affected.

While things seem to have returned to normal as of 2:30 ET, Spotify is still keeping its investigation open and you can submit comments and upvotes on the community site if you’re still experiencing problems.

Outages like this aren’t unusual and normally get fixed very quickly when they happen, so it’s possible that by the time you read this, everything will be back to normal. But it’s also possible that the outage will continue to affect folks on a regional basis, with people in some areas retaining access to the service while others continue to have problems.

The last time a serious outage at Spotify was reported — coincidentally one year ago — the service was unavailable for an hour, but resumed normal operations shortly afterward.

The Now Playing screen on the Pandora desktop app.

One of the original music streaming services is a little service called Pandora. And while Spotify and Apple Music may be the more relevant tune meccas of 2024, Pandora music is still around and is a great way to indulge in many of your favorite albums, artists, and stations.

What is Pandora?
Pandora is a music-streaming service that gives you access to an immense library of albums, artists, playlists, and podcasts. With an emphasis on curation and recommendations, the Pandora app allows you to build “stations” that are algorithmically linked to the types of music you enjoy listening to. The more you listen, the more attuned to your preferences the stations get.

Tidal vs. Spotify: Which music streaming service has the features you need?
Tidal home page on iPhone.

If you in the midst of choosing which music streaming service is best for you, when comparing Spotify and Tidal, price is an important, but not the only, factor to consider. Spotify stands out with its flexible subscription options, offering individual, family, and student plans, each with its own unique benefits. In contrast, Tidal offers various subscription plans, too, but Tidal's calling card is that it includes premium and hi-fi options, with the hi-fi plan providing access to lossless, hi-res audio. Spotify does not offer this ... yet.

Spotify uses the Ogg Vorbis and AAC audio formats for streaming, delivering audio at varying bitrates. At the same time, Tidal's hi-fi subscription offers lossless, CD-quality audio and hi-res audio files in FLAC and HiRes FLAC formats.
