If you enjoy reading, then you probably have an e-reader, such as an Amazon Kindle. Those who just need a basic e-reader are likely to be checking out the base model Kindle, and Amazon just updated the lineup with fresh models.

So how is the new Kindle (2024), especially if you already have the Kindle (2022)? Let’s break it down.

Amazon Kindle (2024) vs. Kindle (2022): design

Amazon kept the design of the Kindle (2024) the same as that of the 2022 model. So if you were hoping for any big changes, well, there aren’t really any. Both Kindles have the same 6-inch e-ink display and plastic body. The dimensions for both are 6.2 inches by 4.3 inches by 0.32 inches (157.8mm by 108.6mm by 8.0 mm) and they weigh 5.56 ounces (158 grams). With these product dimensions and weight, both Kindles are actually very small and lightweight — you could easily fit these into a coat pocket or small bag.

The only change between the two models is that the newer one is made from a higher percentage of recycled materials. The 2022 version was composed of between 30% to 75% recycled plastics, whereas the new one is simply 75%. Both models come in black, which is typical, but both have unique other colors to pick from. The 2022 model came in a bold denim blue color, while the new 2024 version eliminated the blue and went with a Matcha Green instead.

But on the surface, you couldn’t tell which model is older, because they’re practically the same. Unless you have the Match Green version, of course.

Again, the displays on both the Kindle (2024) and Kindle (2022) are pretty much the same, except for a very minor difference.

They both feature a 6-inch e-ink display with density of 300 pixels per inch (ppi) and 16-level grayscale. To put it into perspective, the 2019 Kindle only had a ppi density of 167. So the 300 ppi density of the 2022 and 2024 models puts it on par with the Kindle Paperwhite.

Both the Kindle (2024) and Kindle (2022) also have a front light, allowing readers to read even in dimly lit environments. This is also where Amazon made a slight improvement in the 2024 model, as the light is 25% brighter than on the 2022 version. This again brings it up to par with the Kindle Paperwhite.

Though the newer version is brighter, it’s not very often when one would need to turn the brightness all the way up on an e-reader. Still, if you prefer that, then the new Kindle (2024) is better in that regard.

The Kindle (2024) also has a higher contrast ratio and faster page turning than its predecessor. Though these are small tweaks, they do improve the overall user experience when reading.

Amazon Kindle (2024) vs. Kindle (2022): software and performance

The software and performance on both models of the Kindle are pretty much the same.

Once you set up your Amazon account, you can view your library of books or check out the Kindle Store, including Kindle Unlimited and Prime Reading. Both models have 16GB of storage, which should be plenty for all of the books you may possibly ever want to read.

Settings on the Kindles are easily accessible and give you options for reading settings, notes and annotations, searching, and more. And yes, both models also have dark mode, which inverses the colors so you have white text on black background, making it even better for nighttime reading.

Amazon Kindle (2024) vs. Kindle (2022): battery life and charging

The battery life and charging method for both the 2022 and 2024 models of the Kindle did not change. In 2022, Amazon finally switched over from micro-USB to USB-C, and that continues with the 2024 model. Both come with a USB-C cable in the box, but no power adapter.

A single charge will last around six weeks for both models, depending on usage. Charging it up from zero to full will take about two hours, or about four hours when plugged in from a computer.

Amazon Kindle (2024) vs. Kindle (2022): verdict

If you already have the Kindle (2022), then there is very little reason to get the new Kindle (2024). Both of them have the same overall look, the same display, and the same battery life and storage.

The only reasons you may want to pick up the Kindle (2024) is if you really want the Matcha color, or if you need a slightly brighter display for nighttime reading. But other than that, these are pretty much the same device. This is the definition of an iterative upgrade.

But if you don’t have the 2022 model, then this is a great Kindle to jump in with. It’s small and lightweight, making it incredibly portable. The Matcha color is gorgeous, the display is sharp and crisp, and there’s plenty of storage for your books. And with USB-C and six weeks of battery life, it makes reading easier than ever.
