Google just published a blog post highlighting that a hefty 60 apps have been released that use ARCore. Here’s a quick rundown of some of the biggest and coolest new AR-capable apps.

For starters, ’90s kids will appreciate My Tamagotchi Forever, in which you’ll raise your Tamagotchi characters and populate Tamatown — which is a virtual town that can exist in the real world through augmented reality. There’s also Walking Dead Our World, which is kind of like a blend of Pokémon Go and The Walking Dead, allowing you to wander the real world, hide from zombies, and so on.

It’s not just games that are taking advantage of ARCore. Some of the bigger retailers are also jumping on board. For example, through the Pottery Barn 360 Room View app, you can see how furniture would look in your home without having to actually get that furniture in. You’ll be able to do things like change the colors of the furniture, fabric, and so on. eBay is making use of ARCore too — to help you figure out what size box you need. Using the app, you’ll be able to visualize the size of box you need compared to the actual product.

We’ll continue to see more ARCore apps pop up in the near future. For a full list of the new apps, check out Google’s blog post.

According to Google, ARCore works on more than 100 million Android devices, including many flagships. All Google Pixel phones work with it, as well as the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus, Note 8, Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, LG V30, Asus Zenfone AR, and more. Google also announced that it is working with partners to develop more ARCore-enabled phones, including the likes of Samsung, Huawei, Motorola, Sony, and more.

Also in the theme of AR, Google also announced at MWC that it is now expanding the availability of the Google Lens preview. The feature will now be available in Google Photos across all devices with Android or iOS 9 or later, provided users have the latest Google Photos app.

Google Lens is basically Google’s take on image-based search. In other words, you can use the feature to translate text, search for products to buy, and more. Google is also adding new features in the next few weeks — including recognition for common animals, different dog breeds, different plants, and so on.

Eventually, Google wants to bring Lens to Assistant — and it is actually already available as part of Assistant on Google Pixel devices. While it is a handy feature, it will be interesting to see how Google improves it as time goes on.

Google ditches Play Movies app in favor of Google TV
aftermaster pro fixes tv movie audio issues man on couch watches a mobile phone

The Google TV app is taking over for Play Movies & TV across all Android devices. When Google TV was introduced in late 2020, its mission to replace Play Movies & TV seemed like a good idea as the preinstalled app wasn't doing a lot to take users' attention away from other streaming apps. Google TV's addition to the Android ecosystem has been pretty gradual up to this point, but now it's set to be an essential part of the Android experience.

Play Movies & TV will be officially retired as the face of Android's streaming content store in favor of Google TV starting in May. At that point, buying content on Play Movies & TV will no longer be supported in the Play Store, Google announced earlier this week. Google TV will take Play Movies & TV's place as the preinstalled streaming app included by default on every Android device at that point.

Google Play Store removes info on apps’ most recent update
google play gift card on shelf

The Google Play Store has removed the ability for users to see when apps have been last updated. The feature is standard across most mobile app stores as it serves as a useful tool for mobile owners to stay informed about their software, but now Android users are being kept in the dark. Although other information such as file size and version number is still publicly available in the Google Play Store, the removal of the "last updated" feature in the UI has puzzled many users.

This change seems to have been a long time coming as Google tested the waters in November by removing the feature for select users, however, it was met with backlash from fans. Following the tests, the feature was brought back, and it seemed as if the Play Store was going back to normal for good, but as of now, the "last updated" section is gone for all Android users.

Google opens up Play Store payments in South Korea in response to legislation
Google Play Store.

Google is finally letting developers in South Korea implement third-party payment solutions in their apps in response to new legislation. Going forward, users will be able to select between Google Play billing and an alternate option of the developer's choice, the company explained.

The move comes after the South Korean Telecommunications Business Act was amended to keep companies from forcing mandatory use of their own in-app purchases systems. The primary reason the in-app purchasing system has been targeted is that developers have had to pay a mandatory 30% fee, cutting into profitability for small businesses. Google's adaptation will still require developers to show the Play Store billing system, but they'll now be able to use potentially cheaper third parties. Google will share further details and guidelines around implementation in the coming weeks.
